About Us

  • For over thirty years, Gemma de la Fuente and Scott Paden have been dedicated to the preservation of historic structures and sites which define the past, serving as vessels of our collective memory. The cultural patrimony in which we live, work, and play is an irreplaceable resource that provides our future generations with the unique opportunity to understand the present through the reading of the past.

  • Unlike other cultural objects, buildings must continue to serve their occupants, even as the surrounding world changes, putting more demands upon them. The challenge as preservation architects is then twofold;  to maintain usefulness while protecting the fabric and characteristics that define them as historic artifacts.

  • Citadel accomplishes this via thorough research and examination, an understanding of technology, past and present, and acceptance of the reality that a building unoccupied is a building at risk. From museum quality restorations and reconstructions to rehabilitation and adaptive reuse, we provide our clients with fiscally responsible solutions that abide by the Secretary of Interior's Standards.

Scott Paden

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to a teacher and an industrial designer, Scott became interested in design at an early age. In 1975 he began his studies at Tulane University. Upon graduation in 1981, he went to work in Italy for Ignazio Gardella and Aldo Rossi, eventually returning to New Orleans and then Pennsylvania. Scott's interest in how buildings are assembled and the craft of architecture is rooted in the Amish culture that surrounded him as a child. He is known for his ability to assemble collaborative teams for challenging preservation efforts and his regular presence on-site during construction. His public service as a trustee for cultural institutions has instilled in him a greater understanding of the challenges clients face when managing the stewardship of their historic properties. He is a founding member of Washington's Docomomo Chapter and a member of the Tulane School of Architecture Advisory Board.
