Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to a teacher and an industrial designer, Scott became interested in design at an early age. In 1975 he began his studies at Tulane University. Upon graduation in 1981, he went to work in Italy for Ignazio Gardella and Aldo Rossi, eventually returning to New Orleans and then Pennsylvania. Scott's interest in how buildings are assembled and the craft of architecture is rooted in the Amish culture that surrounded him as a child. He is known for his ability to assemble collaborative teams for challenging preservation efforts and his regular presence on-site during construction. His public service as a trustee for cultural institutions has instilled in him a greater understanding of the challenges clients face when managing the stewardship of their historic properties. He is a founding member of Washington's Docomomo Chapter and a member of the Tulane School of Architecture Advisory Board.
